DeWitt Talmage (1832-1902)

Dr. Thomas DeWitt Talmage was born in New Jersey, and for a time studied law. When he turned to theology, he studied at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary for the Dutch Reformed Church. He ministered to Reformed and Presbyterian churches in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. During the Civil War he served as a chaplain in the Union Army. Dr. Talmage's sermons were syndicated and published around the world in about 3,500 newspapers, giving him the largest "congregation" of his time.
